Problem

If you don't know who your ideal customer profile (ICP) is, every part of your marketing will be completely off and you'll get zero results.

Most people think they're doing everything right - their ads look good, their content is polished, their outreach is professional. But nothing hits. Nothing resonates. They can't figure out why.

The answer is simple: they never correctly identified their ICP in the first place.

Think about the things that resonate with you personally. You can probably name a few examples, right? Now think about the things that don't resonate with you. You're drawing a blank because you literally don't even remember stuff that didn't resonate.

That's exactly what's happening to your prospects when your messaging is off-target.

Lesson/Example

Let me give you a real example from my Lead Generation Academy business.

My ICP for agency owners is: males aged 25-35 doing $500k-$5M per year.

Here's messaging that RESONATES with this ICP:

  • "Every time I try to increase ad spend past $1k per day, my costs skyrocket"

  • "I don't have enough sales calls to fill my team's calendars"

  • "I'm stuck between $100k-250k per month"

Here's messaging that DOESN'T resonate:

  • "I'm trying to get my agency to $10k per month"

  • "I'm trying to get my first client"

  • "Should I do free work because I have no case studies?"

The second set of problems are real problems - but they're not MY ICP's problems. If I used that messaging, I'd attract broke beginners who can't afford my services instead of established agency owners who can.

Implementation

Here's how to nail down your ICP:

  1. Export a list of your current customers (or past 6 months if you've been in business a while)

  2. Look for patterns in: industry, age, gender, job title, and revenue/income

  3. Identify what makes up 80% of your customer base

  4. Write down your ICP and use it as the foundation for all your marketing

Your ICP should represent about 80% of your ideal customer base. There will always be outliers, but this clarity will make your messaging laser-focused and dramatically more effective.
